The Lie of Laziness

When was the last time you relaxed? Annnd I don’t mean watching an episode of your favorite show on DVR or sitting on the couch scrolling through Instagram. When was the last time you REALLY RELAXED? Seriously, that’s a tough question, and I told you there’d be more…

Everybody is moving. Everybody is going somewhere. Everybody is doing something. Everybody is quick to be onto the next thing. People nowadays think if you aren’t doing something, you’re lazy. Sometimes they even think if you aren’t stressing over something, that you’re not even “normal” because nowadays, that is the NORM. The norm is to be busy and to have a full plate. How messed up is that?!

What is your “thing”? Look inside you, look within… What consumes you? What do you spend a lot of time doing or thinking about? Maybe it’s something from this list:

  • working

  • shopping

  • eating

  • children

  • spouse

  • friends

  • opinions of others

  • your appearance & weight

  • social media

  • TV

  • worrying

  • exercising

Would you say that you have even become a slave to one or some of these things? We often excuse the things that we are enslaved to. We don’t accept or admit that it has become a chain. Remember, too much of any good thing can become bad for you. It is so very easy for these things to become unclean bondages.

When you stop, usually we just stop physically… your mind doesn’t stop… So, what comes to mind? Do you feel guilty? Do you feel unworthy when stagnant?

THE LIE OF LAZINESS - I googled the definition of “lazy”, and I. Was. Appalled. The Devil

even influenced the world of Merriam-Webster too! It said, “disinclined to activity; encouraging inactivity” and some synonyms that popped up were “idle; inactive; under-active”... Laziness IS a thing, it CAN BE real, but if you’re here reading this and trying to better yourself, you are NOT LAZY. Doing less is not being lazy. "Don't give in to a culture that values personal sacrifice over personal productivity." Ceasing activity just for a moment does not label you as “lazy”.

When you stop, do you think of Our Father? Maybe, the second you cease is the one second of the day that you decide to pray because you do love God, and you know you’re supposed to. Commonly you pray for something to happen or something you want/”think” you need. You finish praying, and then that’s it… onto the next thing or you feel worse for stopping and “doing nothing” when “doing nothing” is the FARTHEST statement away from the truth. I believe THAT’S SATAN, Y’ALL! Satan is a slave driver. There ain't no rest for the wicked. He wants you to keep going because when you stop (Heaven forbid), you might spend time with God. Really, how can you hear what the Holy Spirit is trying to tell you if you never stop to listen? You may pray, yeah, but what about God? Does He get a chance to talk to a willing listener too??? Make room for rest. Just do it.

Note To Self: RELAAAXXX, you little go-getter, you.

DID YOU KNOW… Sabbath in Hebrew is “Shabbat”. Shabbat literally means to stop, to cease, to pause, to come to an end… IT DOESN’T MEAN LAZY. Generations being brought up today don’t know what sabbath is. We live in a world of constant stimulation. People and almost all children don’t even understand the concept of pausing just for a moment. They don’t know how to SLOW DOWN let alone flat out STOPPING. Kids aren’t allowed to be bored because parents don’t want to deal with it (a topic I’m not going to get into right now). Ceasing activity physically is easier than mentally for most, but seriously, JUST STOP body AND mind. Stop thinking (I know what you’re thinking - YA RIGHT! Good one!). Let’s bring back the sabbath, guys! First, with ourselves and then with our children, friends, or whomever we have influence on.

MAKE ROOM FOR SABBATH. Make room to listen to God too. God wants to be our thing. He wants you to pray to Him, but He also wants you to rest, relax, and listen to Him too. We live in a loud world. I’m sure we’ve all heard this phrase before, “You have two ears and one mouth because you should listen 2x more than you speak.” God has a lot to say too!

MAKE SABBATH PRACTICAL. The Sabbath day was made for the seventh day, yes…, but this is a crazy world. Make sabbath practical in your schedule. Have your sabbath day on Saturday if that works better with your schedule, or make room for sabbath a little bit every single day. However you fit it in, it’ll change your life and be so worth it just like you.

Verses That Help Me:

Genesis 2:2 - “By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all His work. Then, God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it He rested from all the work of creating that He had done.”

YOU GUYS, RIGHT THERE HE TELLS US WHAT LAZINESS IS NOT. Resting is a holy activity. Resting is important. Resting is allowed… AFTER your work. Essentially, resting is part of our good works. If you do never do anything and continue to do nothing, that’s laziness. If you work, then rest, it's a freaking holy activity that everyone should be doing! You were not made to work, work, work, work, wurrkkk.

Exodus 20:8-10 - “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work…”

It is a commandment! Human beings NEED to spend UNHURRIED time in worship and rest each week. God wants us to rest. He wants to take care of us in every area of our life. Don’t neglect God’s provision.

Galatians 5:1 - “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”

SABBATH & REST = FREEDOM. From these things we have chained ourselves to.

Psalm 23:1-3 - “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He refreshes my soul, He guides me along the right paths for His name’s sake.”

Well then… why are you rushing? You lack nothing. God will MAKE you lie down and rest if you don’t do it on your own. That could result in an unwanted burn out, injury, or problem with your health. Just do it! Rest in peace, tranquility, and serenity… He will guide you and refresh you so STOP RUSHING AND TRYING TO DO IT ALL ON YOUR OWN. You may think you’re getting ahead, but you’re really not. It’ll catch up to you.
