STOP Beating YOself Up

NOTE TO SELF! I seriously need to tell myself this A LOT.. I’m super hard on myself, liiike besides God, I am my biggest “critic”. Are you too?

We. Are. Humans… To sin is to human. It is SO EASY TO MESS UP! Worldly pleasures, false gods and idols, Satan… they’re everywhere and we are bound to mess up!! You know what? Our Father in Heaven already knows what we are going to do before we do it. He knows us. HE IS the One with eyes in the back of His head. You know what else? He STILL loves us. He STILL forgives us. He STILL thinks we are worthy. He STILL wants us to be His. I don’t know about you, but if I could rewind to when I was 15 or 16 years old and sneaking out to parties, THAT is the Father I’d want to come home to. Why does He feel this way about us? Cuz Jesus, ya’ll.

I’ve heard stories many times before just as I’m sure you have to… about the kid that went out drinking with his/her buddies and made some mistakes. Some of the mistakes were big and some were small, but regardless, the kid was afraid to go home because of what or how he/she was going to get scolded or disciplined. Then, they usually end up not going home because of fear, make more mistakes, get in more trouble, and oftentimes they get hurt. Our Father isn’t like that… Satan wants you to think He is though… Remember? Satan is a dick.

“THE MORNING AFTER” - Soo, last Saturday, I got drunk. I got super duper drunk. I had a BLAST and got home safely and all that good stuff, but what about the morning after? What about after the worldly crowds, bands, and flashing lights died down? What about when I sobered up and remembered WHO I AM IN CHRIST? I woke up (mind you this wasn’t the first time this exact thing happened - us humans suck sometimes) and I layed there. I thought about the night prior and the choices I had made. A mistake cannot be made twice. The first time it happens, it’s a mistake. If it happens more than once, it is a choice. I’m speaking to myself as well as all of you when I say this, do your best to make the right choices, BUT WHEN (NOT “if”) you fail and fall short and do something that you’re not proud of, please don’t beat yourself up… Turn to God. Turn to the truth.

There’s a difference between beating yourself up and dealing with your mistake healthily...

DON'T: Mope around and think about how terrible you are. Don’t press “pause” and dwell. Please don’t fiill your head with negatives and whole bunch of “what if’s”.

1. Acknowledge, accept, and appreciate. Acknowledge your mistake. Accept that it happened and cannot be changed. Appreciate that you have done those two things and that you now have an opportunity to grow and better yourself.

2. Remember, one action does NOT define you. Your story is not over until God says it is.

3. Turn to the truth. Stop thinking about everything YOU did wrong and about YOURSELF... Think about God’s word, His truth, and what HE thinks about you.

4. Focus on the future greatness that is within you. Smell the roses along your path. Life really is beautiful. AKA: back to don’t dwell.

STOP beating yoself up. That’s what SATAN wants, NOT GOD. Sin happens.

Verses That Help Me

Romans 8:1-2 - “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus, the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.”

Romans 6:23 - “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

How would you feel if you were on death row for something that you did and you heard “not guilty; let him/her go free.”?? Well… that essentially IS what God is telling us every single day of our lives. A sin is a sin. There's no more to it, and every sin is punishable by death.

1 John 3:1&3 - “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And this is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.” & “All who have this hope in Him purify themselves, just as He is pure.”

Our self-worth is based on the fact that God loves us and calls us His children. We are His kids NOW as flawed and sinful as we are… not in the future. God loves our failing selves. He doesn't just love us when we show great achievement. Have confidence in this! You’re awesome!

Romans 4:7 - “Blessed are those whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.”

Our mistakes are GONE! POOF! God has covered them all with His righteousness.

Colossians 2:14 - “He cancelled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross.”

Everything you are beating yourself up about this very second, Jesus died for. He suffered on the cross so that we wouldn’t have to. Try your best to honor that, let your faults go, grow, and move on.

Jeremiah 29:11 - "For I know the plans I have for you', declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'"

Seriously, guys, God wants more for you than you do! How great is that?!
